Gary Selby, P.Eng, has been an active entrepreneur in the oil and gas industry for over 36 years. Gary obtained a graduate degree in Geological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan. He has held positions as geologist, reservoir engineer, consultant, and Chief Operating Officer in small junior and large multi-national oil companies. Gary continues to be involved in the energy industry through his private company.
Gary completed the Alberta Arbitration Mediation Society (AAMS) training program for conflict resolution in 1999. In 2000, he obtained his Certificate Program in Arbitration, also through AAMS. Gary subscribes to an “interest-based” conflict resolution model, valuing flexibility in the process and honouring client needs.
Gary is a principal of Arangel Energy Corp., which offers a wide range of Appropriate Dispute Resolution (ADR) services. For over eleven years, Gary has engaged as a conflict resolution specialist, serving as mediator, facilitator, arbitrator, coach, and trainer. His ADR practice has consisted of over 550 mediation sessions in many areas including government, commercial, corporate, community, workplace, construction, and court sanctioned. Gary participated in a contract to mentor and coach new mediators in Alberta for the Provincial Court Civil Division. Gary is on the mediator rosters for the ERCB, AAMS, BCICAC, and Provincial Court (Civil and QB).
Arbitration cases have included private contracts with individuals and large construction disputes involving millions of dollars. Gary has acted as both a sole arbitrator and as a member of arbitral panels. He has arbitrated commercial securities disputes with the Canadian Investment Dealers Association. As a nationally accredited trainer, Gary has developed and presented numerous conflict resolution courses for education institutions and private clients in western Canada. Arbitration rosters include the AAMS, AAA, and IDA.
Gary has been a long-term volunteer in the community for over four decades. His passion for helping others has led him to many not-for-profits, notably Scouts Canada, Community Mediation Calgary Society (CMCS) and Centrepointe. Gary is currently President of CMCS, which provides free mediation services to the citizens of Calgary regarding neighbourhood disputes.
